Boston Apartment Guide: South End

South End brownstones

South End

South End brownstones

The South End — not to be confused with South Boston or ‘Southie’ — is a charming residential neighborhood full of old brownstones and local shops. Located very close to the Back Bay neighborhood, it feels miles away from the city center with its cobblestone streets and brownstone homes. Parking here is mostly street parking requiring a permit, but many residents don’t bother keeping a car in the city. South End used to be known as a popular LGBTQ area, but nowadays people of all stripes call it home.

South End Attractions

South End is known for its artsy, hip feel. Many professional workers from Boston live here, and many local restaurants and shops have cropped up to serve them.

Within a short walk are nationally-known health and lifestyle brands like Whole Foods, Sweetgreen, CorePower Yoga, as well as many locally-owned businesses like Formaggio Kitchen (cheeses/specialty foods) and Myers + Chang (asian cuisine).

Living in the South End means the arts and culture are just steps from your front door. The SOWA Artists District is just a block away, and small galleries are scattered throughout the neighborhood.

The South End is walkable, and many residents walk to their jobs in Back Bay and throughout Boston. Bus lines and Silver Line service the area, and the Back Bay stop on the Orange Line train is nearby.
